September 17 is designated as Constitution Day and Citizenship Day to commemorate the signing of the U.S. Constitution in Philadelphia on September 17, 1787. The United States Constitution, ratified in 1788, is in operation since 1789 and represents world's longest surviving written charter of government. The first three words —"We the People"— affirm that the government of the United States exists to serve its citizens. The Constitution defines the structure of our federal government.
