Resources in a Time of Community Grief

​Within the last few days, two California communities (Monterey Park and Half Moon Bay) have experienced tragic shootings. One of the shootings coincided with the Lunar New Year celebrations and the other seemed related to a workplace grievance. Full details and explanations are pending. What is known is that our Asian American and Hispanic American friends, family and associates were directly impacted.
We do not need to wait for all the particulars to be forthcoming to know that such public acts of violence affect all of us. From that perspective, Reiss-Davis Graduate School extends sympathies to those who were hurt or killed, and to their loved ones ... and to all who are reeling from these most recent incidents of gun-related losses.
Our colleagues at Vista Del Mar and Reiss-Davis have located some resources that may be useful to those impacted by these tragedies, their support systems, as well as professionals who are assisting with recovery:

• Support Services for Monterey Park Victims through Los Angeles County
• “Coping with Mass Violence,” a talk by Dr. Richard Espinoza sponsored by the Los Angeles Public Library and Los Angeles County Psychological Association scheduled for February 18

Reiss-Davis will continue to monitor both situations. As a learning community, we remain steadfast in our determination to educate our students, colleagues and the broader community, to better understand what seems incomprehensible, to interrupt the pathways that may lead people towards violence, and to develop more effective means of prevention.
